Adult earache at night: mention discharge and hearing changes
Ear pain can come from more than one cause, including problems outside the ear itself. A late-night assessment should begin with the symptoms and whether an examination is needed. Discharge, swelling around the ear, hearing change or feeling generally unwell are reasons to seek prompt advice rather than repeatedly applying an old remedy.

Give a useful ear-pain history
Say which ear is affected, when pain began, whether there is fluid or blood, and any recent swimming, flight, injury or loud noise. Mention dizziness, fever or a foreign object. Do not assume a wax problem or infection based solely on how a previous episode felt.

Do not probe or share treatment
Do not put cotton buds or other objects inside the ear, attempt to remove a stuck object or try to extract wax yourself. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using products, especially with discharge or possible injury. Reusing someone else’s antibiotic or drops can delay the correct assessment.

Check the examination and referral limits
Ask whether the service can examine the ear safely or whether an equipped clinic or specialist is needed. Significant deterioration or other emergency symptoms should bypass a routine booking queue. If symptoms persist or recur, agree follow-up rather than repeatedly treating an assumed cause through chat.
