Practical questions

Sore throat at night: swallowing and breathing come first

Difficulty breathing, inability to swallow, drooling or severe symptoms worsening quickly needs emergency assessment, not a wait for a late-night booking. In Dubai call 998 for a suspected emergency. For a less severe sore throat, describe the symptoms before asking for a particular medicine.

Explain the course and ability to drink

Tell the clinician when the throat pain began, whether you can swallow fluids and whether there is fever, swelling or another change. Mention relevant conditions, pregnancy and medicines. A photograph of the throat is not enough to decide that all concerning causes have been excluded.

Do not make antibiotics the booking condition

Many sore throats do not need antibiotics. Assessment should decide the cause and appropriate care, rather than fulfil a request for leftover or shared treatment. If you need symptom relief, ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitability for your health and other medicines; this article does not select a product or dose.

Make a plan for persistence or deterioration

Ask what change means seek help immediately and when a non-emergency throat problem should be reviewed. Persistent or recurrent symptoms deserve appropriate follow-up. Confirm the after-hours service’s assessment limits and referral arrangement; the phrase “24-hour doctor” does not prove every procedure, investigation or appointment is available.
