Practical questions
A red eye at night: vision changes should not wait
Do not assume a red eye is a simple infection. Pain, a change in sight, light sensitivity or an eye injury can need urgent assessment. A red eye in a contact-lens wearer also deserves prompt advice. Choose the care setting by those symptoms, not by whether a home visit sounds convenient tonight.

Describe vision and lens use first
Say whether one or both eyes are affected, when it began and whether sight has changed. Mention contact lenses, trauma, a foreign object or chemical exposure. A phone image cannot reliably rule out a serious problem; if vision is affected, do not drive yourself to care.

Avoid reusing old eye treatment
Do not wear contact lenses while the eye is red and do not share or reuse another person’s prescription drops. Tell the clinician what has already been used. Ask a qualified professional about suitable interim care rather than adding products to make the eye look clearer before an examination.

Confirm whether a specialist setting is needed
Ask whether the symptoms require an eye service or emergency department with the necessary examination equipment. A general doctor booking does not guarantee an adequate eye examination at home. For a suspected life-threatening emergency call 998; for urgent eye symptoms obtain timely assessment rather than waiting for a routine reply.
